X VCG Auctions with Reserve Prices: Lazy or Eager

چکیده

VCG auctions with reserve prices are practical simple auctions with provably approximately optimal revenue, and have been crucial in the analysis of other appealing auctions. When different reserve prices are applied to different bidders, the auctioneer may choose to apply the reserves either before (eagerly) or after (lazily) the comparison of bids. Both auction forms have been studied in various settings. We show that, for VCG auctions on matroid settings, eager reserves generate both more social welfare and more revenue than lazy reserves, when monopoly reserve prices are applied. We also identify a connection between lazy reserves VCG auctions and lookahead auctions in general downward closed settings. This connection enables a perspective that yields short and elementary proofs for key steps used in several recent works. Of independent interest is our generalization of lookahead auctions to downward-closed settings. We also show a 2-approximation for its revenue in matroid settings.

A Field Guide to Personalized Reserve Prices

We study the question of setting and testing reserve prices in single item auctions when the bidders are not identical. At a high level, there are two generalizations of the standard second price auction: in the lazy version we first determine the winner, and then apply reserve prices; in the eager version we first discard the bidders not meeting their reserves, and then determine the winner am...

Mixed-bundling auctions with reserve prices

Revenue maximization in multi-item settings is notoriously elusive. This paper studies a class of two-item auctions which we call a mixed-bundling auction with reserve prices (MBARP). It calls VCG on an enlarged set of agents by adding the seller—who has reserve valuations for each bundle of items—and a fake agent who receives nothing nor has valuations for any item or bundle, but has a valuati...

Position Auctions with Bidder-Specific Minimum Prices

Position auctions such as the Generalized Second Price (GSP) are commonly used for sponsored search, e.g., by Yahoo! and Google. We now have an understanding of the equilibria of these auctions, via game-theoretic concepts like Generalized English Auctions and the “locally envy-free” property, as well as through a relationship to the well-known, truthful Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) mechanism. I...

Ascending price Vickrey auctions for general valuations

Ascending price auctions typically involve a single price path with buyers paying their final bid price. Using this traditional definition, no ascending price auction can achieve the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) outcome for general private valuations in the combinatorial auction setting. We relax this definition by allowing discounts to buyers from the final price of the auction (or alternativel...

Auctions Beat Posted Prices in a Small Market

In a model with two buyers and sellers we consider the choice of sales mechanism from three possibilities: posted prices, and auctions with and without reserve prices. With homogenous goods, sellers’ expected revenues are highest when both sellers auction with reserve prices – 33% higher than if posting prices and 100% higher than if auctioning without reserve prices. When sellers can choose th...
